"My Work in Action"
As a
Bioinformatics Scientist:

In my role as a Bioinformatics Scientist, I analyze biological and health data to derive insights that can inform healthcare strategies, particularly in the context of infectious diseases. My work has largely focused on HIV drug resistance. By studying the genetic sequences of HIV, I can identify patterns of resistance to drugs used by people living with the virus. This research is critical for tailoring treatment plans to ensure they are effective.
One of the most humbling experiences in my career was being part of the rapid response team during the COVID-19 outbreak.
At the time, I was working at the Molecular Laboratory at Makerere College of Health Sciences. We ran countless patient samples, analyzing data to better understand the virus and its impact. It was intense, but it reminded me of why I chose this path—to be part of something larger than myself, to use data and science to save lives. Currently, I am applying data science techniques like machine learning and artificial intelligence to global health issues, particularly in resource-limited settings like Uganda. I am excited about the potential these tools have to revolutionize how we approach healthcare in Africa and beyond.
My Inspiration
for persuing a PhD

Well, I have many answers to this one question yet all are valid. First of all, I’ll be honest—it wasn’t always part of the plan. In fact, I was jobless at the time, having left some opportunities and offers behind in search of something more. I had gained significant experience in wet laboratory work—collecting biological data—but I realized that I wanted to gain the computational skills necessary to analyze that data. The more I learned, the more I knew that this was my path. I wanted to make meaning out of the data I had learned to generate.
I also saw the bigger picture. Africa is at a critical point in its development, and I wanted to be part of the research and data revolution that is shaping our future.
By pursuing a PhD, I am equipping myself to make significant contributions to global health.
There’s also a personal side to this story. I want to be an inspiration to girls who come after me—daughters, nieces, even strangers who may relate to my journey. I come from humble beginnings, but I didn’t let that stop me from dreaming big and working toward those dreams. If I can do it, so can they.
Lastly, I wanted to become a philosopher in the truest sense of the word—a lover of wisdom. There’s always more to learn, and I am committed to lifelong learning. A Doctorate of Philosophy is the next step in that journey.

wellness in my daily practice
I incorporate wellness into my life in many ways. I practice self-awareness through journaling and reflection, exercise through swimming, and spiritual growth through prayer and meditation.
I maintain emotional balance by cultivating positive relationships and setting boundaries. I read, I journal, I set to-do lists, and I hold myself accountable, sometimes with my accountability partners. But I am also learning give myself grace and prioritize rest. Wellness is not about perfection; it’s about progress.

Common Misconceptions About Wellness
One of the most common misconceptions about wellness is that it’s a luxury reserved for people who have free time or money to spend. Many believe wellness means indulgence—spa days, expensive retreats, or rigid fitness regimens. In reality, wellness is a mindset, a daily practice that anyone can embrace, regardless of their circumstances. It’s about listening to your body, nurturing your mental health, and making intentional choices that align with your values and lifestyle.
Another misconception is that wellness equates to physical fitness alone. People often think that if they are working out, they’re “well,” but true wellness is multi-dimensional. It encompasses emotional resilience, mental clarity, spiritual growth, and finding balance in all aspects of life. To address this, I advocate for a holistic view of wellness, emphasizing that it’s not just about what you eat or how much you exercise but about how you care for yourself as a whole person—body, mind, and spirit.

Long-Term Goals in Data Science & Wellness Coaching
My long-term goals are to integrate the scientific rigor of data science with the human-centered approach of wellness coaching. In data science, I aim to develop solutions that address global health challenges, particularly in under-resourced areas like Uganda, where data-driven approaches can revolutionize healthcare delivery. Through bioinformatics and AI, I want to improve diagnostics, treatment options, and health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
In wellness coaching, my goal is to guide individuals to find balance in their lives. I believe that health isn’t just about treating illness but preventing it through lifestyle choices. I aim to create systems and tools that personalize wellness plans using data science—tailoring wellness strategies to individual needs based on health data, lifestyle patterns, and personal preferences.
Ultimately, I envision a future where these two fields intersect in ways that empower people to live healthier, happier lives.

Final Thoughts: What Lies Ahead
I believe the future holds endless possibilities, both in my professional career and my personal life. As a scientist, I will continue to contribute to the field of global health, using data science to solve critical health challenges. As a wellness coach, I will continue to inspire and guide others toward balanced, fulfilling lives.
My vision is to combine these two worlds—science and wellness—into a holistic approach that benefits individuals and communities. Whether through personalized health interventions, data-driven wellness strategies, or public speaking, my goal is to make a lasting, positive impact on the world.
